The Perfect Summer White
Many of you are already loyal fans of Les Rials. I know I am. Here are a few reasons why I think this special little wine may just be the perfect summer white…
1. Les Rials is made with the obscure and mysterious “Loin de l’oeil” grape, which offers luscious pear, pineapple, grapefruit, apricot, and spun sugar flavors, among many others.
2. It’s such an appealing wine for so many palates, you can feel free to serve it at your next gathering. Expect rave reviews from nearly everyone who tries a glass. It’s a true crowd pleaser.
3. It appeals to wine geeks (like me) because of the obscure grape, the complex yet refreshing aroma and mouthfeel, and its versatility.
4. Speaking of versatility… this is a wine that is a joy on its own, yet pairs magnificently with a wide variety of foods, including heavily spiced Asian cuisine.
5. Is it dry or a touch sweet? You tell me! Some of you have said you love the wine because it's bone dry, others claim they love it because of the slight hint of residual sugar. I say you're both right. This wine adapts to every situation. It really is complex.
6. It is so very refreshing. Get it nice and cold and head out to the deck. Sit, enjoy, and beat the heat.

The 2007 Insignia (a 13,500-case blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot) offers a seamless introduction to this flagship cuvee. Its inky/purple color is followed by aromas of creme de cassis, incense, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings, cedar, and spice box. It possesses a massive, opulent mouthfeel, serious tannins, and no hard edges. This stunning effort should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last 40 years. I would not be surprised to see it become the greatest Insignia to date and close in on a perfect score.
In case you think the aging curves I have described are unrealistically long, I have the Joseph Phelps regular Cabernets from the mid-seventies as well as the Insignias in my cellar, and those wines are still drinking beautifully at 30+ years of age. Today’s wines are better made. R.P.
